My phone buzzed quietly on the table, and I glanced down to see a text notification from Jasper. I wouldn’t be able to see what it said until I opened it, but just seeing his name was enough to bring a smile to my lips. The two of us had gotten closer, texting each other all the time, talking on the phone late at night, and going out on several more dates. The more time I spent with him, the more I liked him.

For the last week and a half, I’d been on assignment overseas, protecting a famous K-pop singer who’d found herself being harassed by some creepy stalker. Eventually, the guy had fucked up when he tried to sneak in and see her, posing as a hotel employee. I’d taken him to the ground as soon as I recognized him and held him there until the police showed up and were able to make an arrest. I’d gotten home sometime yesterday afternoon, but suffering from a serious case of jetlag, I’d only been able to stay awake long enough to text Jasper that I’d made it home before I passed out in my bed.

I’d missed getting together with my family while I was away, but I’d missed being with Jasper even more. We’d FaceTimed and texted as much as we could given the time difference, but it wasn’t as good as having him right there, being able to reach out and touch him or hold his hand. That was when I knew I was in trouble.

I’d never been in love before but having witnessed my older siblings as they each fell in love; I knew the signs and symptoms. Given the way I felt whenever we were together, and more importantly when I was away from him, I knew without a doubt I had it bad. The only problem was, I didn’t know how he felt. Sure, I knew he liked me, enough so that he’d been willing to throw one of his rules out the window in order to go out with me. And of course, I knew we had a good time together and the sexual chemistry was still there, bigger and better than the night we’d met.

But beyond that, I had no idea. Did Jasper think about what he wanted in the future? If he did, was I what he pictured? Did he crave my company as much as I craved his? Did he feel like something was missing when we were apart too? Those questions and more kept circling around my brain until I thought I was going to lose my mind. I’d never felt so twisted up in all my life.

“Okay, well, if no one else has anything to discuss, I’ll let you get to work,” Micah said. He looked around the table and up at the monitors but when no one said anything, he called the meeting to an end.

Snatching my phone off the table, I quickly opened it and read over Jasper’s text before responding.
